Eating cornbread and finding craft beer in Dalston

Well, our Tuesday activity this week was a bit of a fail. We were planning to go to Pergola of the Roof in Shepherd's Bush, a London summer offering that features supposedly delicious food and drinks on a rooftop. But alas, it is not open on Tuesday. Wednesdays to Sundays only!

So our back-up plan? The pub of course. We went to The Defectors Weld in Shepherd's Bush. A trendy pub with decent food (except the chickpea salad - blergh) and good beer. But that's about all there is to say about it. So, instead, I'll tell you about our Friday outing to Streetfeast in Dalston, East London.

Streetfeast is run by the same people who do Dinerama in Shoreditch, and Hawker House in Canada Water. I have been to Dinerama, and I enjoyed Streetfeast more

They are essentially night markets, with delicious street food and any kind of alcohol you could ask for. Streetfeast had a gin club, at least two different brewers as well as the main bar, a rum bar, and a wine bar. Don't be expecting cheap drinks though, it's at least £4.75 for a pint - mostly Frontier or Kozel. The cheapest wine was £5. And, hallelujah, there is also a great craft beer stall with lots of different beers to choose from. IPAs and APAs galore! I've been missing good beer, what is the crap they have over there?! Warm and flat? What a waste!

I was also surprised by the steep cost of the food. I paid £5 for a tiny Venezuelan cornbread wrap thing - it was delicious don't get me wrong, but I'm still converting everything back to NZ dollars in my head and it was not worth that! I also got a bacon cheeseburger from the burger shop, £10, and it was okay....I was covered in grease after eating it though. I think the best offering was the sliders - you can get 3 sliders for £10 and they were delicious. Another good looking option was the naan sliders from the indian stall. There is plenty more food to choose from though: a steakhouse, fish n chips, sashimi, pavlova, pizza, and a seafood shack featuring lobster mac and cheese!

The best part about these markets though is the atmosphere. There are loads of different people around, all having a good time after a long week at work. I liked Streetfeast better than Dinerama purely because its less crowded, and there was more seating. Dinerama is definitely rowdier, thanks to its close location to Liverpool street. Or maybe I just left before it got chaotic!

Unfortunately its only open for a few more weeks - its closing - forever! Ever! I'm not sure why, but I suspect the lack of having a tube station nearby, and its costly food and drink, may be a couple of reasons. I'd love to go back before it closes, and once I've received my first paycheck of pounds!

NB: Try to get there before 7pm, there is a £3 entry fee after that.

I'm sorry about the iPhone quality of my photos, I didn't think it was a good idea to take my camera out anywhere there is alcohol....
