Going to gigs in Galway

I just realised that I still haven't written any blog posts about my trip to Ireland! Rookie error.

In October, Chris and I stayed on in Ireland after a quick weekend trip to Dublin to have one last hurrah with our friends Chris and Julia, who have been exiled back to NZ.

We bussed from Dublin to Galway and it was great watching the scenery change – I was especially excited when the fences made of rocks started coming into view.

While Dublin wasn’t my favourite place in the world, I did love picturesque Galway! A lively university town, known as the home of Irish music.  It’s an easy town to walk or bike around and there are decent bus options.

We stayed at Bunk Boutique Hostel which is a great place and pretty good value for money – plus the staff were lovely. It’s in a great location, 1 minute walk to Eyre square. There is also a pretty chill jungle-themed café across the road called, obviously, Jungle Café. And it’s also only a minute to An Pucan – one of Galway’s best pubs for watching local music.

Experiencing Irish music

Most pubs on Quay Street and in the Latin Quarter will have some form of live music most nights. We saw two different types of live music.

The first was at Sonny Molloy's and this was probably the best music we saw. It was a full on Irish band…they were great and the crowd loved it.

We also went to An Pucan and they had a guitarist singing covers – and he was awesome! He did a great version of Steve Earl’s Galway Girl, which I listened to on repeat after the show.

Other pubs with a reputation for good music include the Kings Head, Taaffes, and Front Door.

Also - I loved the Irish pub food! It's quite expensive though.

Walking Galway

Walking along the river from the cathedral was the highlight of my time in Galway. You walk through the university and from there you'll arrive at a really quiet part of the river. It was so peaceful.  The best part was seeing Menlo castle which is covered in moss and grass. It looked like something out of a movie - make sure you keep walking until you reach there, at least.

Next time I think I’d bike along it, and go a bit further!

We also walked out to Galway Bay which is equally as lovely. I always appreciate seeing the sea now that I live in London and the Thames is the closest thing I have to an ocean. There are a few great pubs out there too, it's a great area to stop for a pint of Guinness.

Galway is great! It's a cool place to spend a couple of days or two. I think I'd rather go there than Dublin for a night out. We then rented a car and headed out to the Wild Atlantic Way and then headed down to Doolin - but I'll write about that in another post because I have way too many photos!
